Oh, I understand. I'm amazed at what comes out when I face a blank page with no idea of what I'm going to put down on it. I've written things and wondered why certain things happen, and later on when I write something else it fits in those spaces perfectly ... and I didn't do it consciously at all. It's like my brain has it all figured out and refuses to let me in on the 'behind the scenes' so that I experience the story just as any reader would. Those moments are really exhilarating.

I was only joking. Normally I have a pretty clear idea what I'm going to (or attempt to) write. You know I don't honestly think I've ever done the 'blank page' thing. I tend to think about a story all the time, even if only in the back of my mind. Even to the extent of acting out the dialogue while I'm driving (I'm a mobile engineer so I do a lot of driving). But I know what you mean about the surprises. When I open the laptop and start to write it's amazing how many times the words seem to change (hopefully for the better) and replot the storyline. It's almost as if someone else has got inside my head and is saying 'no do it this way, it sounds better'.
